Pet Peeve – Open Cabinet Doors

Having bonked my head so many times on an open cabinet door has taught me to close it, no matter how soon I plan to return to it. One of my favorite movies has such a detail in it that makes it the basis for the rest of the movie (“Last Holiday”, 2006).

That said, it drives me nuts when others leave them open and I’m quick to close the doors; sometimes not very quietly, I’m afraid. I’ve even commented about how there must be a poltergeist in the house as I close the doors.

So the other day my daughter came over with my littles. She went into my kitchen and did the same thing, so I made that same comment as I closed it behind her.

My oldest little asked, “Gramma, what’s a poltergeist?”

I didn’t want to give him all the scary details so I said, “It’s someone who goes around and leaves all the cabinet doors and drawers open, Hon.”

He thought for a split-second, got up from the dining room table, went into the kitchen, opened one of the drawers, then returned to his seat at the dining room table and happily announced, “There! Now I’m a poltergeist!”
