If You Had Only One Day Left…

Yesterday’s appointment with my heart doctor left me with only a few questions.

I feel this guy is totally competent and answered every question I threw at him about my condition, but I reserved a few of them for pondering over with my coffee this morning. They are ones I don’t think he’d have the answers to anyway, like:

If you only had a day (or a week, etc.) left to live, is what you’re doing right now going to matter to YOU in the end?

Should you push yourself as hard as you do?

Should spending time with loved ones be Priority One?

Should the traffic stress matter so much?

Should you make that call to that stubborn, estranged relative or friend?

How about finishing that story you’re writing?

Will a slice of pie or that coffee table dust or a weeded garden or forgiveness change your world?

Today, like every morning about this time, I am prioritizing my agenda for the day and it turns out that it is evolving into getting things done that would make my Hubbin’s life easier if something happened to me. Like working on that not-so-big mound of paper on my desk (thanks to Monday’s efforts), donating a lot of extras that we have not used in the five years we have lived here, and perhaps finish painting the cabinets for the dining room remodel he is working on.

And though I know I have asked for forgiveness in the past, this morning’s prayers are focused on once again asking for forgiveness for the wrongs and regrets, knowing I have a few, and smiling for the first time this morning because now I’m hearing a song in my head, “I Did It My Way,” by Frank Sinatra.

See, my doctor would not have the answers to all of these questions; only I can answer them.

So, in the long run, would these things matter if I had only one day left? Would I spend my last day doing these?

I’d like to think so.

No regrets, don’t you know…
