Today marks the bazillionth day of 100 degree temperatures in my little corner of the world, so I think it’s a futile effort to continue to water my non-producing garden and even my lawns at this point.
Do I just give up on greenery or make the city coffers wealthy for another month? Who all at the city utility office needs their car payment for September, raise your hand…
Can you tell I just received my water usage bill for last month?
I think the only thing worth saving at this point in late summer is the water fountain that is receiving attention from some bees, butterflies, and birds. I’m ready to purge my garden again and contemplating the prep for next year, or perhaps letting my efforts go by the wayside until next spring; but with no end in sight with this drought, the weeds sure are flourishing.
Other such nonsense:
I have an iron pole in my back yard. I never figured out what it had been used for in its previous life and I’ve been trying to find a use for it for five years now. It stands about four feet tall and is approximately six inches wide; it was planted in a cement base that I’ve encircled in short, circular bricks. My plan is to fill the base between the pole and the bricks with dirt and have flowers planted around it next Spring. I want to paint this iron pole to look like a barbershop pole or maybe something patriotic and put a solar light on top of it, so of course now I’m surfing for lighting on Amazon.
More randomness, but perhaps more of an interesting side quest than my yard woes.
My dog is about eight-and-a-half months old now, still a puppy, but weighs almost seventy pounds. One of his favorite morning routines is to torment the neighbor’s dogs.
My dog does not bark but he will go to the fence in our yard that we share with our neighbors and stand there until their dogs notice him. And then he’ll take off, racing the length of the six-foot high wood fence from the back of our yard to the front, back and forth until he’s tired of it. Their dogs will race along with him on their side of the fence, barking all the while, and this happens every morning. This seems to have become a pattern, but I’m thinking it’s all done in fun because they don’t bark at him every time he’s in the back yard. It’s probably become a play date for all of them. I will occasionally watch him from my dining room window and hear the other dogs through the glass, and when he’s done or tired or bored of this play, he turns away, comes into the house, drinks about a gallon of water, and then flops down on his bed by the fireplace to rest a bit.
I cannot imagine how such a fun, dog activity is going to play out this Fall and Winter when my back yard turns muddy with every significant rainfall, which Oklahoma is famous for. The back yard flooding will require a whole new blog post to cover the extent of the drama – I might do a video about it on my Instagram page at some date, if we ever get any rain again. The weather soothsayers predict yet another two weeks of 100+ degree weather, so that won’t be happening any time soon. *sigh*
That’s about all the meandering for the day, so on with my agenda. This means processing eggs into egg bites for the freezer, baking some sugar-free peanut butter cookies, and figuring out what I will fix for dinner, which will probably by something like Chicken Curry.
Thanks for stopping by, make it a great one!
