When my oldest grandson was about four years old, I took him to see the fireworks on Independence Day, knowing it may be the first ones he might remember seeing with Grandma.
We found a parking lot filled with other fireworks viewers who had brought chairs and snacks and beverages – it was almost like a 4th of July party was going on in that church parking lot as everyone prepared for the fireworks to start. When the first fireworks lit up the sky, exclamations could be heard from young and old – the “oohs” and “ahhhs” rolled through the parking lot.
After one vividly bright red, white, and blue one exploded in the night, my little grandson began to sing, “Red, white, and blue, red, white, and blue, the colors of our flag are red, white, and blue….” The crowd went silent. After he had finished, everyone applauded this tiny voice that had sung about our nation’s flag, and I was so moved by my little patriotic Gambaby.
