Unclaimed Property, PSA

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but each state has its own Unclaimed Property account within the Treasurer’s Office.

If you have ever had a rental or utility deposit that you never received, closed out an account that still had money in it, or were due some intangibles, chances are the Treasurer’s Office is in receipt of it. You do not have to contact nor pay a third party to get these funds, you simply look up your name, provide the Treasurer’s Office with the required identification, and voila, they send you the funds that were sent to them on your behalf. It costs you nothing but your time, and a copy of your I.D. You do not need to pay a company to do this for you, it is a free service that the state provides companies who want to get the money off their books.

I went down this rabbit hole yesterday morning.

I searched my name, my Hubbin’s, my kids’, and my friends, and I found five unclaimed properties for just me. I also searched other states’ Unclaimed Property accounts for places I have lived before – Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Missouri, and so on, just in case.

Each of my claims was under $50; the total of all of them was a little over $55, but I was able to claim them all on one form. And guess what, it’s my $50, right?

I also found several others for my family and friends, so I texted them about the find.

This can be a worthwhile rabbit hole to go down if you’re so inclined. I made $50 *grin*

Good luck, and happy hunting!
