Remember when CDs went everywhere with you? Yes, I’m that old.
Well, I lost my CD music case the very day I was to take an almost 600 mile, one-way, road trip. I was bummed! I had looked forward to Janis, Celine, Elton John, Neil Diamond, and for the record, yes, I also had ABBA, the Carpenters, and some Hank and Dolly in my collection as well. The perfect solo road trip music – I could sing at the top of my lungs to the best in the business and nobody would be telling me to not quit my day job.
So what was I going to do? I couldn’t just go out and purchase that many albums again, but in a lightbulb moment, I decided to drop by my daughter’s place to see if I could borrow her music. She looked at me rather oddly and hesitatingly assented, so armed with my luggage, road trip snacks, and her rather extensive music case, I set out on my trip. About an hour into the trip, I zipped open the case to see what would get me through one of the many dead zones on my trip, and that’s when I discovered that ALL her music was heavy metal. Much of her music was Metallica, which up until then, I had never listened to.
I’d like to say that I fell in love with Metal that trip, but that didn’t happen. Instead, I found I had an aversion to much of the head-banging stuff, but that Metallica actually had a few songs I liked.
I’ve not been so close-minded since then, well, at least about music, and this evening I am appreciating the talent the band provided to the world while I am doing some writing.
